When they finally arrive in El Dorado, they are amazed by the city's grandeur and riches. However, they soon realize that the city is inhabited by a tribe of people who are being threatened by the ruthless Spanish conquistador, Cortez (voiced by Bob Hoskins).
The film begins with Tulio (voiced by Kevin Kline) and Miguel (voiced by Kenneth Branagh), two con artists who pose as Spanish conquistadors. They convince a governor that they have discovered a route to the fabled city of gold, El Dorado. However, their plan is soon foiled when they are forced to actually find the city.
The two men embark on a perilous journey through the jungle, accompanied by a beautiful and mysterious woman named Chel (voiced by Rosie Perez). Along the way, they encounter various obstacles, including fierce predators, treacherous terrain, and rival treasure hunters.
