In 1848, Northup met a Canadian abolitionist named Samuel Bass, who was working as a carpenter on a plantation. Bass discovered Northup’s true identity and helped him send a letter to his family in New York. The letter eventually reached Northup’s family, who had been searching for him.
In 1841, Northup was approached by two white men, Merrill Brown and Abram Hamilton, who offered him a job as a fiddler for a circus in New York City. Northup accepted, but was drugged and sold to a slave trader named James Burch in Washington, D.C.
